A different way to make space for therapy

EMDR Intensives offer a more concentrated way of working with trauma, PTSD and distressing past experiences — giving you dedicated therapeutic time to focus on what matters, without the repeated stopping and starting of weekly sessions.

Perhaps you’re here because…

Something difficult has happened and, even though time has passed, it still feels as though part of you hasn’t quite moved on.

You might recognise some of these:

  • A traumatic or distressing experience is still affecting you, perhaps through difficult memories, emotions, physical reactions or situations you find yourself avoiding.
  • You understand what happened intellectually but still feel stuck. You know the event is in the past, but your mind or body doesn’t always seem to respond that way.
  • There’s something specific you want to work through, and you would like dedicated time and space to focus on it.
  • You’ve had therapy before and found it helpful, but something still feels unresolved or continues to affect you.
  • Weekly therapy doesn’t appeal to you or is difficult to fit around your life, and you would prefer to work in longer, more concentrated blocks of time.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before getting in touch. Part of the process is understanding what is happening for you and considering whether an EMDR Intensive might be an appropriate way forward.

What is an EMDR Intensive?

An EMDR Intensive is a way of doing EMDR therapy in longer, more concentrated blocks of time, rather than the traditional model of weekly 50-minute sessions.

EMDR is an established psychological therapy that helps people process distressing experiences that continue to affect them in the present. An Intensive gives us protected time to focus on this work without having to repeatedly stop just as we get going and pick things up again the following week.

Your Intensive is carefully assessed, prepared for and individually tailored around you. It isn’t about squeezing as much therapy as possible into one day — it’s about creating the time and space to work in a focused, thoughtful and clinically appropriate way.

Why choose an intensive?

More time and space to focus on what matters.

Who I work with

I work with adults who are experiencing the ongoing impact of trauma, distressing experiences or difficult events from their past.

This might include:

  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Distressing or intrusive memories
  • Anxiety linked to previous experiences
  • Specific fears and phobias
  • Traumatic bereavement
  • Experiences of abuse or bullying
  • Occupational trauma
  • Multiple or cumulative difficult experiences

You don’t need to have a diagnosis of PTSD — or any particular diagnosis — to enquire. What matters is understanding what is continuing to affect you, what you would like to change and whether EMDR is an appropriate way of working with this.

EMDR Intensives aren’t suitable for everyone. We’ll consider your individual circumstances carefully as part of the assessment process and decide together whether an Intensive is an appropriate way forward.

Meet Dr Donna Rooney

Chartered Clinical Psychologist & EMDR Therapist

I’m Dr Donna Rooney, a Chartered Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years’ experience working in psychological services across the NHS and private practice.

Much of my work has focused on helping adults understand and recover from trauma, PTSD, anxiety and the impact of difficult life experiences. I’m particularly drawn to EMDR because it offers a way of working not only with what we understand intellectually, but with experiences that can continue to feel emotionally or physically “stuck”.

My approach is warm, straightforward and collaborative. I want therapy to feel human as well as evidence-based — with plenty of space for you to ask questions, go at an appropriate pace and understand what we’re doing and why.
